The railroad was converted into a park in 1989 with a master plan to increase its total length to approximately 46 miles. The new trail borders environmentally sensitive areas requiring the installation of approximately 4,100 feet of elevated boardwalks, utilizing 1,000 nine-foot, three inch by four foot precast planks. The planks will be supported every 20 feet by two concrete micro-piled concrete piers. Additionally, 14 bridges with segmented retaining wall abutment systems will be constructed.
