The Department of Veterans Affairs engaged Delta to program and plan the renovation, expansion, and modernization of the Emergency Department at the VAMC in Martinsburg. Delta worked with Medical Center representatives and followed VA standards and guidelines to develop functional and space programs, as well as several options for the patient care area and the adjacent site.
Prior to the modernization, the Emergency Department had inefficient circulation and insufficient space to treat the 1,100 patients who use the facility each month. The project nearly doubles the size of the Emergency Department and provides new ambulatory and ambulance entrances, additional general purpose and mental health examination rooms, and a decontamination room.
Vital improvements were also made in accessibility, patient privacy, triage, support areas, and security. To maintain services and accessibility, Delta developed a phasing plan that permitted construction to take place without reducing the Emergency Department’s patient capacity.
